Why do they leak?
Now that we have had a look at the signs, it is time to dive into why batteries leak acid. They shouldn’t typically leak, but it can happen if they are over-charged or have some form of physical damage.
Of course, car batteries are not eternal. As a general rule of thumb, you should replace them every three to five years. The longer you use a battery, the more likely it will be susceptible to leakages.

Another factor that can cause battery leakages is extreme cold weather. In conditions like these, the acid can freeze. This could lead to the body expanding, placing pressure on the cells. It is sort of like what happens with water pipes when they burst in winter. The chances of this happening are low but it is best to keep in mind it can happen.
Water
Some of you may be wondering if car batteries can also leak water. They contain a solution of acid and water. Under highly cold conditions, it is possible for the mixture to separate. Issues can arise if you top the battery up with distilled water and proceed to over-fill it. These are the only instances where there is a chance of it coming out of the battery. Normally, batteries are going to leak their acid.
